The connection process

Your VPN app authenticates to a remote server and negotiates encryption keys. Traffic is then sent through an encrypted tunnel to that server.

Encryption and IP masking

The encrypted tunnel protects traffic on the path to the VPN server. Destination sites usually see the VPN server IP. Encryption does not stop you from sharing personal information voluntarily.

DNS and leak protection

DNS requests turn domain names into network addresses. A VPN with properly configured DNS and leak protection can reduce accidental exposure outside the tunnel.

Does a VPN slow your internet?

Extra routing and encryption can add latency. The impact depends on distance, server congestion, network conditions and protocol.
